Jon Grace, MD

Intensivist

I grew up in southern California attending the University of California Irvine for undergraduate where I double majored in immunology and chemistry and minored in European history as a Regent’s Scholar as a first generation college graduate in my family. I then went on to attend medical school at the University of California San Diego where I enjoyed the (non-surgical) technical aspects of medicine as well as physiology and initially matched into anesthesiology residency at University Hospitals Case Western Reserve.

After my first year I found that while I enjoyed the critical care and pharmacology of the field, I deeply missed being able to see care through for my patients and forming a bond with them or their families. I was the only person in my class who liked critical care and internal medicine rotations more than the OR. I was fortunate enough to be able to seamlessly transition into an internal medicine residency the following year at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

At UPMC I was able to grow my interest in critical care and also found a love for pulmonary medicine and chest imaging research. I completed and published a paper on fat distribution and COPD severity during my time at UPMC and went on to continue my training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Michigan. There I continued my chest imaging research instead focusing on asthma and the relation between high resolution CT scanning and asthma severity. I published several reviews and a book chapter on asthma phenotypes and severe asthma management. Prior to graduating I helped form a collaboration with a deep learning engineering group and authored a grant application that was awarded funding by GlaxoSmithKline to investigate the potential uses for deep learning algorithms on CT scans in patients with severe asthma on biologic medications.

I am excited to continue my adventure in Anchorage with The Alaska Hospitalist Group where I hope to serve the amazing community with my pulmonary and critical care knowledge while getting to know Alaska better. I currently serve as the Intensivist Medical Director at the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer.

I also have started an unaffiliated outpatient pulmonary practice- Alaska Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and can be contacted here or at (907) 375-8785.
